Our story

Join us for an adventure-filled experience on two hulls! The kittiwake seagull dances over the waves in the early morning as far out as the middle of the North Sea. Even big seas and gale-force winds are no problem. This is the freedom we experience with our catamaran, cruising past granite rocks, in and out of fjords and across the open sea. And that is why we named her ‘Kittiwake’. We invite you to join us to enjoy the uniqueness of the Bohuslän archipelago, in harmony with nature and the elements. Lean back and enjoy the tour – or hoist and haul! The choice is yours!

Jump out of your busy schedule and unwind with friends or family on a boat trip. Feel the salt on your face, encounter seals and marvel at breathtaking sunsets. Unfamiliar with the sea? No need to worry: whether you are a complete novice or an experienced sailor, we cater to your wishes and needs. Safety is our top priority, we know the waters surrounding Tjörn and Orust like the back of our hand, and a catamaran stays flat and stable with much less risk of feeling seasick than on a normal boat. On the other hand, if you feel adventurous and enjoy speed, we can offer 20 knots or more in favorable winds.

Kittiwake is easy to handle and enables everyone to take an active part in the sailing experience. Come on board with a group of friends or with the whole family, for a day trip, a weekend or even longer. With two big hulls, a net in front and a generous cockpit, there is plenty of space to socialise or withdraw to gaze at the horizon in silence if you prefer. There are more advantages to a catamaran: with retractable dagger-boards we can reach the most scenic parts of the archipelago and drop the anchor in shallow bays.

The fresh salty air will of course make you hungry! We serve filling good food onboard, made of high quality ingredients. This is supplemented with delicacies sourced from local producers, such as honey, sourdough bread, soft cheeses and Tjörn Ale. We often top this with a surprising twist from nature’s own cupboard. Seaweed crisps, cloudberry jam and why not try some chutney made of Sea Buckthorn? Our menu has a vegetarian base combined with the best seafood Bohuslän has to offer, and meat on the barbeque for those who wish. Combined with a glass of wine, carefully selected by our sommelier.

There is more to Bohuslän than sailing and eating! We cooperate with providers of other outdoor activities such as kayaking, climbing, fishing and seaweed safaris. We also sail to events such as live music in Slussen and Käringön.

And remember, the sailing season is long: we cruise until at least October, enjoying bookable saunas run by local communities – a west coast speciality. Our foul-weather gear - overalls used by sea-rescue teams - will keep you warm on the boat.

We aim at showing without destroying! We want to show you our beautiful surroundings, at the same time preserving the very thing you have come here to experience: the fascinating landscape and ecosystem of the Swedish West Coast. In order to do so, we strive to source our food locally: to minimise transport, maximise quality and provide opportunities for local producers. We give waste management the highest priority and make our own soap and hand cream for you to use, avoiding harmful ingredients going into the sea. We strive to reduce, reuse and recycle. This is evident also in the boat’s interior, with for instance reused sail in some details and carabiners as hooks. Electricity in the boat is produced by solar panels. Our business plan includes even further refinements to ensure the lowest possible impact on the environment.

Kittiwake offers large sociable spaces. Apart from the net in front and space inside the hulls, there is a large cockpit that offers full protection from rain and wind. The steering wheel in the front middle of the cockpit and all halyards, sheets etc. are handled from the same space. Easy access, easy to handle.
In the starboard hull you will find a nav-station and a wardrobe for your foul weather gear. There is a toilet with shower on the left as you come down the companionway. Further forward there is a large kingsize bed on the bridge-deck (2X2Meters) and in front of that yet another cabin with a double bed.
In the portside hull we have a sofa at the back next to another wardrobe for foul-weather gear. There is a kitchen in the middle with a double bed on the bridge-deck behind the kitchen. As in the other hull, there is a double cabin in the front. The interior is functional and plain with a well thought-through design.

About us

with our lives divided between Eastern/Southern Africa and Europe, we feel at home in many places. Our base is now the stunning archipelago of Bohuslän on the Swedish west coast north of Gothenburg, where we enjoy nature and sailing adventures. For a change of waters, you can also join us to Zanzibar, where we own a traditional wooden boat of 10 meters.

Johan Bloom

Practically born on board, Johan has sailed all his life. Especially through leading sailing camps for youngsters, he has intimate knowledge of the islands and fjords of Bohuslän. When not in a boat, he paints, runs a multitude of art projects, and saves our beaches from plastic. Master of Yachts 200gt and Swedish Ship’s officers Class VIII.

Eva-Marie Bloom Ström

Originally more of a landlubber from Dalarna, Eva-Marie loves the woods and spends most of her free time foraging for edible plants, fruits and berries. She now also enjoys sailing, has acquired the boatmasters’ certificate and is discovering a different kind of flora in the skerries and the sea. Otherwise, she’s a linguist at the University of Gothenburg. Amongst other skills, she speaks Dutch and Swahili.

We collaborate with a multitude of West Coast based companies and persons to assure you the best possible experience. The home port of Kittiwake is Skärhamn on the island of Tjörn, one hour's drive from Gothenburg.
